Adhesive products for optical pick-up assembly – The voices of developers

In case of adhesive products for optical components, there are demands for secure adhesion in accordance with the design of each client company.

Especially, reliable products for optical pick-up unit assemblies which enable the replay and recording of optical disks were developed mainly for three applications

  1. For products for accurate optical pick-up unit fixtures, a technology to fix important components, laser diode and photo detector on the second time scale by irradiating with UV rays in order to allow the reading of submicron pits (small holes) in optical disks including CDs, DVDs and BDs, is available.
    Currently, hundreds of millions of optical pick-up units are manufactured based on these technologies in the entire market every year
  2. Products for the skew fixture of optical pick-up units are based on highly reliable technology which allows their important components and actuator parts to endure impacts and continuous vibrations.
    Partly thanks to this technology, optical disks can be used commonly for laptop PCs and car audio systems.
  3. Products for the fixture of optical components of optical pick-up units are designed so that the important optical components of pick-ups, the objective lenses, reflection mirrors, etc., do not deform or warp even under severe environmental conditions. Also, high durability technology is available to ensure that adhesive products do not deteriorate due to the effects of light and heat.
    This technology enables optical disks to be accurately read even in a hot area or cold area of the earth in every season.

Development meeting the clients’ needs

To meet the diverse needs of clients, we are always attempting to strike a balance among a number of characteristics and achieve optimization.

Conventionally, we used to use different adhesive products depending on the types of substrates and the parts where the adhesive products were used. However, this method increases the types of adhesive products used and imposes a burden on clients for management. For this reason, we are engaged in development by anticipating that it is advantageous to standardize adhesive products used for a certain device type as much as possible in consideration of the clients’ production process and quality assurance.

Furthermore, we are challenged by other factors such as the ease of adhesive manufacture and environmental load, and we will tackle these factors one by one as development requirements.

Development undertaken faithfully in accordance with clients’ needs

In the course of development, I always try to avoid placing disproportionate weight on certain evaluation results by sometimes shifting my perspective to make different attempts, rely on past knowledge and experience, and proactively gather the necessary information.

I sometimes succeed in finding a clue to gain new knowledge and solve a problem by referring to the compositions achieved in the past, trying to find out their significance, and exchanging information and communicating with my colleagues cross-functionally. I am always willing to make an extra effort to develop valuable technologies and products for our clients.

Playing the role of a bridge with our clients through adhesion

As optical devices are special components, we receive different requests from our clients. However, based on the trustworthy relationships with our clients which we have built up over a long period of time, I believe that they heavily rely on sales personnel as well as our products.

I have made some round trips over a 100km distance in one day, or climbed a mountain with a client to have a meeting at the top. I always try to play the role of a bridge between our clients and our company or affiliate companies to reinforce their confidence. I strongly believe that such a feeling of trust will eventually encourage them to use our products.

The next stage - making use of “experience”

To achieve optimal adhesiveness for each optical component with diverse needs and requests, it is important to share conditions reflecting the objective setting, and overall balance and progress.

I am determined to contribute to the prosperity of our clients by respecting this process, and search out valuable products for them.
