Difficulties in the development and commercialization of ultra high purity technology

What is ultra high purity technology?

Ultra high purity technology is used for low pollution adhesives. I have been engaged in developing LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) products by applying such technology.

With regard to this technology, we have reviewed the main ingredients from the viewpoint of molecular structures, and promoted technological improvement by evaluating raw materials contributing to enhancement of the properties of liquid crystals and optimizing their composition. As newly synthesized raw materials are used as the main ingredients, I have been working in cooperation with not only members in my group, but also the group responsible for material synthesis.

Facing difficulties in development

During the course of development, high strength in addition to low pollution for liquid crystals were required.

However, the method we adopted to achieve this resulted in the deterioration of other physical properties. Because of this, there were cases where our products were rejected by customers. Meanwhile, we kept on developing better products by learning something from such experiences.

We continued testing hypotheses by reviewing the compositions and properties of products which were already commercially available and products-to-be, and examining the conditions necessary for achieving a variety of properties required by customers.

Nevertheless, we took up the challenge of a completely new idea in order to meet exacting customer demands. Sometimes, we adhered to conventional ideas and concepts too much to allow us to put out new ideas. However, we managed to eliminate our stereotypes and restart development by verifying our hypotheses from scratch.

As these development activities were conducted in tandem with the group responsible for material synthesis, we strived all the more to share information, and proactively submitted the reports of test results and proposals concerning matters to be improved. These efforts were the major factor which contributed to the successful commercialization of products.

Regardless of what project it is, I always attempt to develop a better product by eliminating barriers among positions and groups, by proactively and insatiably gathering necessary knowledge and evaluation techniques, and making full use of them for my development activities.

I believe that an environment which enables me to frankly discuss a variety of subjects with persons with personality and the degree of freedom allowed for each research worker to achieve the development target are important factors, and they synergistically contribute to the creation of new values on a company-wide basis.

What are the sealant demanded by customers?

With regard to the sealant for LCD we currently deliver to display manufacturers in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, China, etc., it is very important for us to ensure not only simple adhesive strength but also compatibility with peripheral materials.

We often face new challenges due to changes in peripheral materials and customer display designs while we have not made any change to our products.

The factors causing such issues are diverse. However, I strongly believe that we succeeded in developing the “ultra high purity sealant” by tackling the issues through close cross-functional cooperation and efforts, and examining an appropriate method for responding to issues in advance.

Successfully achieving the commercialization of products after overcoming a series of difficulties

The issues happen suddenly at any time.

It was immediately before starting the mass production process after a large amount of effort made by the members when the problem occurred.

In this case, the causes were not identifiable because the conditions of the products we offered were stable and no quality-related problems were found, so we tried to solve them by taking as many measures as possible in cooperation with the R&D center and informing our customers of possible causes and countermeasures. As a result, we successfully managed to start the mass production process on time. This is an example of the issues we tackled by gaining cross-functional support.

Development is a new challenge.

To bring high quality products to the present market in a stable manner, it is important to continuously develop new technologies, we are determined to offer new proposals exceeding customers’ needs by thinking outside the box.
